Jon Rauch stopped Atlanta cold at Turner Field as the Washington Nationals
beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 9 to 7.

Nick Johnson was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors. He belted a three-run homer
(his 1st of the season) in the 3rd inning, lined a one-base hit scoring a run
in the 5th inning and doubled which scored a run in the 7th inning.
Washington had 15 hits for the game and Atlanta had 12.

The winning pitcher was Esteban Loaiza(1-0) who allowed 7 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Loaiza was helped out by Rauch who recorded his 1st save. John
Smoltz(0-1) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 2
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Loaiza, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'

One run was the difference at SBC Park as the San Francisco Giants defeated
the Cincinnati Reds 3 to 2.

Jeff Fassero(1-0) came through for Lee Michaels with an excellent relief
stint. He performed flawlessly in relief in his 1 inning. Cincinnati had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Fassero got help from Tyler Walker who was credited with his 1st save.
Brandon Claussen(0-1) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 1 walk in
6 and 2/3 innings.

Dave Murray was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

Brian Giles lofted one into the 'cheap seats' as the San Diego Padres topped
the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 2 at SBC Park.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. San Diego ended up winning it in the 10th
inning. Mark Loretta led off and keyed the rally when he slapped a one-base
hit. After an out was recorded, Chris Hammond stepped up to the plate and he
stroked a base-hit. One out later, Giles came up and he drew a walk to load
the bases. Robert Fick was up next and he doubled, and an error was also
committed, clearing all three ducks off the pond. San Diego finished with 14
hits while San Francisco ended up with 10.

Hammond(1-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Trevor
Hoffman got the save, his 1st. Tyler Walker(0-1) suffered the loss in
relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
