Javier Valentin ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds
defeated the New York (NL) Mets 9 to 6 at Shea Stadium.

Valentin provided much of the offense. He lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 1st inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 4th
inning and blasted a solo shot (his 4th of the season) in the 6th inning.
Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still
not enough for New York (NL) to come away with the victory.

The win went to Aaron Harang(2-0) who allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Harang got relief help from Todd Coffey who gained credit for his 1st save.
Pedro Martinez(1-1) took the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving
up 5 runs in 4 innings.

Catcher Mike Piazza smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI for New York (NL) but his
effort was wasted in the loss.

In a thriller the New York (NL) Mets staged a dramatic comeback then held on
to win over the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 8 to 6 at Great American
Bpk.

New York (NL) bats came alive with a big top of the 9th inning when they
blasted Cincinnati for 7 runs on 8 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by
Cliff Floyd who quieted the home crowd when he blasted a two-run home run
(his 1st of the season). Cincinnati scored in 5 different innings, but their
shaky pitching kept them from victory.

Aaron Heilman(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
2 runs. Roberto Hernandez recorded the save, his 1st. Todd Coffey(1-1) was
the loser in relief.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Floyd said. 'If you just
keep trying good things can happen!'
