The Washington Nationals nipped the Colorado Rockies 3 to 2 at Nationals Park
in a hard fought contest.

Washington came up with 2 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 3 hits.
They would be enough to earn the win. Colorado threatened in the 9th but
Washington was able to put down the rally.

The winning pitcher was Luis Atilano(1-0) who allowed no runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Matt Capps earned the save, his 3rd. Ubaldo Jimenez(0-1) took the
loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks.

Lee Michaels was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

Johan Santana whitewashed San Francisco on 3 hits as the New York (NL) Mets
defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 1 to 0 at AT&T
Park.

Santana(1-0) was on top of his game. He gave up just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings. San Francisco was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

Matt Cain(0-1) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks
in 7 and 2/3 innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the game,
Cain was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were
going to be in for a long night. Santana brought his 'A' game with him - he
had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one
or two bad pitches the entire game!
