Brandon McCarthy(2-1) finally bested his Chicago (AL) opposite, Chris Sale(1-6), by the score of 2 to 0. McCarthy gave a fine effort for Oakland. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.55 to 2.93. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. Grant Balfour preserved the game for McCarthy, recording his his 11th save. The loss was charged to Sale. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 7 innings of work. 'He gutted it out' Lee Michaels said of McCarthy. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'

Cody Ross then doubled. One out later, Ryan Sweeney dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Boston ended up with 8 hits for the game while Cleveland had 5. The win went to Matt Albers(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Albers was helped out by Franklin Morales who recorded his 2nd save. Josh Tomlin(0-1) was tagged with the loss. Boston now has a record of a division leading 13-9. With the loss, the Cleveland ballclub's record is 13-7.
