Fielder helped send the fans home happy. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 1st inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4th inning. Jose Valverde relieved and was untouched by New York (AL) as he recorded the save, his 1st. The win was credited to Verlander(1-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Hiroki Kuroda(0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Verlander - except New York (AL). Joe Girardi lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

The losing pitcher was Alex Cobb(2-2). 'Sanchez gave us exactly what we needed today.' Chris Couch said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'

Overall Tampa Bay out-hit Seattle 11 to 8. The win was credited to James Shields(3-5) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run. Tom Wilhelmsen(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. Chris Couch was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us this afternoon'
