Wade Miley(2-1) was on top of his game in San Diego as he tossed a beauty of a
no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. The Arizona team won by a score of 6
to 0.

Miley was spectacular. He only walked one San Diego batter. The tension
built to a fever pitch. After the 8th inning everybody in the ballpark was
anticipating what would happen in the 9th. Arizona managed 12 hits in their
victory.

Andrew Cashner(0-2) took the loss. When asked how his stuff was out there,
Miley looked a bit incredulous (as did this reporter) and replied 'A bit
better than average, I'd have to say'

Jorge De La Rosa pitched a complete game as the Colorado Rockies defeated the
San Diego Padres by the score of 4 to 1 at PETCO Park.

San Diego found themselves trailing quickly as the Colorado bats came through
in the first inning as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. That early scoring
was all that De La Rosa(1-1) needed. San Diego made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Edinson Volquez(0-2) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 6
hits in 6 innings. 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Kimon
Michaels after the game. 'We lost this game today because we didn't follow
the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.'

Jose Fernandez didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning as the Miami Marlins
defeated the Atlanta Braves 3 to 1 at Marlins Park.

Fernandez(1-0) was solid in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 2 hits and 5 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Fernandez whiffed an
impressive total of 11 Atlanta batters. The right-handed Fernandez had his
no-hit bid broken up by Andrelton Simmons who singled with one out in the 6th
inning. Miami ended up with 6 hits for the game while Atlanta had 2.

Fernandez was helped out by Steve Cishek who recorded his 1st save. Mike
Minor(1-2) was hit with the loss. Andy Virostek was asked about the
performance of Fernandez, 'He had his good stuff out there this afternoon.
The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that
seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

Jordan Zimmermann struck out 10 batters as the red-hot Washington Nationals
topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5 to 1 at Nationals
Park.

Zimmermann(3-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Washington. He
went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 1 walk seeing his ERA drop from
3.79 to 3.20. Both teams totaled 8 hits on the afternoon.

Tyler Clippard recorded his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Cole
Hamels(0-2). Chris Couch was upset after the game. 'I don't like to
complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they
ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule
book.'

The Philadelphia Phillies pitching coach might be looking for a new job soon.
His team allowed 14 runs while Stephen Strasburg(2-0), with relief help from
Zach Duke, allowed Philadelphia 4 runs in a laugher.

Adam Laroche was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors. He lined a base-hit bringing
in two baserunners in the 1st inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the
4th inning. Washington out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 14 hits to 6.

Jonathan Pettibone(0-1) was the loser. He gave up 7 runs in 3 innings of
work. Washington continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 7
games and counting.
