game at Tropicana Field.  The final score was the Houston Astros 3, the Tampa
Bay Rays 2.
 
Houston tallied 2 runs in the 4th inning.  The biggest moment was provided by
Chris Carter who quieted the home crowd when he cleared the fences for a
two-run home run.  Houston had only 5 hits for the afternoon.  
 
Erik Bedard(1-1) was the winner allowing 1 run in 6 and 2/3 innings. Jose
Veras recorded his 2nd save.  Alex Cobb(0-1) was the losing pitcher.

Sean Doolittle went 3 strong innings as the Oakland A's defeated the Minnesota
Twins 9 to 4 at O.co Coliseum.
 
Oakland scored 5 runs in the decisive 2nd inning when they came up with 5 base
hits.  The early run support proved sufficient for Jarrod Parker(1-2) and
Oakland.  That was all the run support Parker required.  Parker got help from
Doolittle who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 1st save.
 
Samuel Deduno(0-1) was the loser.  He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks.

made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.  
 
Tom Wilhelmsen gained credit for his 1st save.  'Some losses are harder to
take than others' Chris Couch lamented after the game.  'This was one of
them.'

The Cleveland Indians nipped the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 4 at Progressive Field
in a hard fought contest.
 
Cleveland brought 4 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they came up
with 4 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Mike Aviles who came
through for the home fans when he brought the hometown folks to their feet
with a Grand Slammer.  Baltimore threatened in the 9th but their rally came
up short.  
 
Scott Kazmir(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing
4 runs. Kazmir got help from Joe Smith who was credited with his 2nd save.
Chris Tillman(0-1) suffered the loss.  
 
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Craig Lombardi after the game.
'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'

Michael Brantley had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Ubaldo Jimenez allowed Andy Virostek
to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Cleveland Indians bested
the Baltimore Orioles 7 to 3 at Camden Yards.
 
Brantley had a big day at the plate.  He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the
1st inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 3rd inning, laced a base-hit in the
4th inning and lashed a single in the 9th inning.  Cleveland finished with 17
hits in the victory.  
 
The victory was credited to Jimenez(1-1) who went the distance, allowing 3
runs. Miguel Gonzalez(0-1) was the loser.  He allowed Cleveland 6 runs in 2
innings of work.

The Boston Redsox tallied 4 runs in the 4th inning and and the Chicago (AL)
Whitesox locked up in an exciting one-run game at Fenway Park.  The final
score was the Boston Redsox 6, the Chicago (AL) Whitesox 5.
 
Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a good day at the plate.  He tripled which scored a
run in the 4th inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 6th inning and
doubled in the 7th inning.  Chicago (AL) threatened in the 9th but Boston was
able to put down the rally.  
 
The victory went to Koji Uehara(2-1) who went 4 innings, allowing no runs.
Craig Breslow gained credit for his 3rd save.  Jake Peavy(1-1) was hit with
the loss.  He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
 
When questioned about the loss, Craig Lombardi said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there this afternoon.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get it
done this time.  Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the
smiles.'

Clay Buchholz mowed down 13 Minnesota batters at Target Field as the Boston
Redsox beat the Minnesota Twins 5 to 1.
 
Buchholz(1-0) gave a fine effort for Boston.  He went 7 and 1/3 innings and
surrended up 7 hits and 3 walks improving his ERA from 1.93 to 1.50.  Boston
ended up with 13 hits for the game while Minnesota had 7.  
 
Buchholz was helped out by Craig Breslow who recorded his 2nd save.  Mike
Pelfrey(1-1) suffered the loss.  He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow
an earned run in his 6 innings of work.  
 
'I had my good stuff today.' Buchholz said. 'As the game went along I started
to get the feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'

The game started off with Houston taking the lead in the first plating an
isolated run on 2 hits.  For the game Houston out-hit Oakland 14 to 6.
 
Lucas Harrell(1-1) allowed 1 run in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jose Veras got the save, his 1st.  Bartolo Colon(1-1) was the losing
pitcher.
