Pedro Martinez took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the New York (NL) Mets
topped the Chicago (AL) Whitesox by a score of 4 to 1 at Shea
Stadium.

Martinez(1-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Chicago (AL) batters. He didn't give up much, just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings. Martinez mowed down 10 Chicago (AL) batters. The right-handed
Martinez had his no-hit bid broken up by Pablo Ozuna who singled with nobody
out in the 6th inning. New York (NL) banged out 7 hits on the night.

Jon Garland(0-1) suffered the loss. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances
tonight,' Craig Lombardi said. 'Martinez just was too much for our guys.'
