The Washington Nationals defeated the New York (NL) Mets by a score of 5 to 2
at Shea Stadium.

Washington had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3
runs. Austin Kearns kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Kearns got a
great jump and stole second easily. Two outs later Jesus Flores stepped up
to the plate and he was walked intentionally. Elijah Dukes came up and he
rifled a three-run blast (his 3rd of the season). Washington managed only 5
hits on the afternoon.

Steven Shell(2-0) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Joel Hanrahan earned his 3rd save. Joe Smith(2-2) was given the
loss in relief.

Nationals Park.

Arizona drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning as
they scored 2 runs on 4 base hits. Arizona had 11 hits for the afternoon
while Washington had 5.

Dan Haren(1-3) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Haren got
relief help from Max Scherzer who gained credit for his 4th save. Jason
Bergmann(0-4) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 11 hits and 1 walk.

Kaz Matsui blasted 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Houston Astros defeated the
Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 8 to 4 at Minute Maid Park.

Matsui had a big day at the plate. He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st
inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 2nd of the
season) in the 6th inning and doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 8th
inning. Houston ended up with 13 hits for the game while Milwaukee had 4.

The victory went to Wandy Rodriguez(3-2) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Jeff Suppan(0-5) absorbed the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks
in 6 innings.

'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some
adjustments,' Matsui said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting you
out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'

One run was the difference at Minute Maid Park as the Houston Astros defeated
the St. Louis Cardinals 6 to 5.

Houston scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning scoring 3
runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Ty Wigginton began the rally when
he hit a single. Hunter Pence came next and he doubled. Darin Erstad then
doubled. Kyle McClellan then fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to
cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed
ball. Humberto Quintero got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.
Mark Loretta added his contribution to the rally and stroked a single. Jose
Valverde pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 6th save.

Geoff Geary(3-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. McClellan(0-1)
was the loser in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an
inning.

Paul Bako jacked one out of the ballyard as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the
San Diego Padres in 13 innings 7 to 5 at Petco Park.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Cincinnati came out on top in
the 13th inning. Jolbert Cabrera started the inning off right when he
doubled. Corey Patterson came next and he cleared the fences for a two-run
home run (his 2nd of the season). Bako followed, but he was set down on
strikes. One out later, Jeff Keppinger struck out, unable to help the rally.
Cincinnati finished with 13 hits in the victory.

Francisco Cordero(1-2) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the
victory. Trevor Hoffman(2-1) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning
giving up 2 hits and no walks.

In an great finish the San Diego Padres won in dramatic fashion over the
Atlanta Braves by a score of 6 to 5 at Petco Park.

San Diego scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Brian Giles began the San
Diego spurt when he stroked a base-hit. One out later, Adrian Gonzalez
stepped up to the plate and he cracked a two-run shot (his 6th of the season)
making San Diego victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. San
Diego totaled 8 hits on the afternoon.

The winning pitcher was Trevor Hoffman(2-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
The losing pitcher was Mike Gonzalez(0-2) in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1
hit in 1/3 of an inning.

Andy Virostek was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when
asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he
volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Dave
Murray, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you
come up on the short end of one of these!'

Brandon Webb racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts and Conor Jackson
had 4 hits as the Arizona club defeated the Washington Nationals by the score
of 6 to 1 at Chase Field.

Webb(4-4) put on a good performance. He allowed just 8 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings improving his ERA from 2.98 to 2.48. Arizona banged out 9 hits on
the afternoon.

Odalis Perez(1-4) was the losing pitcher. 'Everything felt great' Webb said.
'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody today.'

Ben Sheets pitched 7 strong innings at Miller Park as the Milwaukee Brewers
won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the San Francisco Giants by the
count of 4 to 3.

Milwaukee came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After two outs Jason Kendall began the
rally when he doubled. Ray Durham next to the plate and he doubled. Rickie
Weeks then smashed a two-run homer (his 7th of the season). Milwaukee rapped
out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Salomon Torres(4-1) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory.
Brian Wilson(0-3) was the loser in relief. Dale Sveum was in great spirits
in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the
thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know
how my counterpart, Lee Michaels, feels right now - and it's not very good.
It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!'

Brian Wilson shut Milwaukee down as the San Francisco Giants defeated the
Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 6 to 2 at AT&T Park.

San Francisco came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. The key
at-bat was by Randy Winn who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he
doubled plating all three baserunners. Both teams totaled 10 hits on the
afternoon.

Pat Burrell had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Brad Lidge came through with a solid 3
innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves in 16
innings by the score of 10 to 9 at Citizen's Bank Park.

The score was knotted at 9 after nine innings. Philadelphia ended up winning
it in the 16th inning. After an out was recorded, Jayson Werth drew a walk.
