Justin Verlander struck out 12 batters and first baseman Prince Fielder
blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York
(AL) Yankees 4 to 2 at Comerica Park.

Fielder helped send the fans home happy. He popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 1st inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4th
inning. Jose Valverde relieved and was untouched by New York (AL) as he
recorded the save, his 1st.

The win was credited to Verlander(1-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 2
runs. Hiroki Kuroda(0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7
innings of work.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Verlander - except New York (AL).
Joe Girardi lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our
guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes
it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

Anibal Sanchez racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts as the Detroit
Tigers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 3 to 0 at Tropicana
Field.

Sanchez(1-0) was simply too much for the Tampa Bay batters. He allowed just 5
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.40 to 2.84. Detroit
had 7 hits for the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Alex Cobb(2-2). 'Sanchez gave us exactly what we needed
today.' Chris Couch said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for
strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had
them chasing it.'

Shortstop Elliot Johnson had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at SAFECO Field as the
Tampa Bay Rays pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Seattle Mariners by
the count of 5 to 1.

Tampa Bay won the game with a rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 5 runs
on 6 hits. The key at-bat was by Johnson who silenced SAFECO Field as he
ripped a single bringing home two baserunners. Overall Tampa Bay out-hit
Seattle 11 to 8.

The win was credited to James Shields(3-5) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run.
Tom Wilhelmsen(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.

Chris Couch was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
this afternoon'

Felix Hernandez(4-3) and Felipe Paulino(0-2) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners coming out on top of the Kansas City
Royals 2 to 0.

Seattle scored 2 runs in the 4th inning when they came up with 3 base hits.
The key at-bat was by Mike Carp who made the crowd come alive when he popped
a two-run clout over the fence. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th
inning with no runs scored after that point.

Hernandez got relief help from Tom Wilhelmsen who gained credit for his 7th
save.
