Vinny Castilla left the yard and had 2 RBI at Great American Bpk as the
Washington Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 7 to
4.

Washington had the game winning rally in the 8th inning when they tallied 4
runs on 6 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Preston Wilson who
deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he belted a three-run homer
(his 3rd of the season). Chad Cordero was perfect in the ninth giving him
his 7th save on the season.

Luis Ayala(3-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Ricky
Stone(1-2) was hit with the loss in relief. Washington now has a record of
15-21. Cincinnati has a record of 15-8 after the loss.

43,292 fans were treated to a fine game at RFK STADIUM as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Cincinnati brought 3 runs across the plate in the 6th inning. The crucial
at-bat was provided by Javier Valentin who quieted the home crowd when he
cracked a two-run shot (his 6th of the season). Washington made it exciting
in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Aaron Harang(4-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. David
Weathers recorded his 10th save. Esteban Loaiza(2-6) was the losing pitcher.

Atlanta fell behind quickly as the Washington offense came through in the

Hernandez(2-4) needed. Both teams ended up with 9 on the afternoon.

Center fielder Jim Edmonds smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the St. Louis
Cardinals defeated the Chicago (NL) Cubs 5 to 2 at Busch Stadium.

Edmonds had a good day at the plate. He stroked a single in the 4th inning,
blasted a solo shot in the 6th inning and lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run (his 8th of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago (NL) had
a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Jason Marquis(6-3) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory.
Jason Isringhausen got the save, his 9th. Greg Maddux(2-3) was hit with the
loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Center fielder Corey Patterson slammed 2 homeruns and Mark Prior mowed down 13
St. Louis batters at Wrigley Field as the Chicago (NL) Cubs beat the St.
Louis Cardinals 8 to 4.

Prior(1-3) pitched a solid game. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3
innings. For the game Chicago (NL) out-hit St. Louis 12 to 8.

Matt Morris(1-1) was the losing pitcher. Prior was pleased with his
performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my
location was right on. The fans really got into the game too - that always
helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'

John Smoltz came through with a solid 9 innings and Kelly Johnson jacked one
out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI as the Atlanta Braves defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 9 to 0 at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh was unable to claim the lead after Atlanta went ahead in the top of
the 2nd inning scoring 3 runners on 2 hits. That scoring would be all that
was needed. Atlanta had 17 hits for the afternoon.

Smoltz(4-1) went the distance for the shutout. The losing pitcher was Dave
Williams(4-3). He was unable to control the Atlanta offense and allowed 17

In a game for the baseball purist, Horacio Ramirez(2-2) and Zach Duke(3-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Atlanta Braves finally emerged
victorious over Pittsburgh Pirates, 3 to 0.

Atlanta set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on
3 base hits. That early scoring was all that Ramirez needed. Both teams
ended up with 6 on the afternoon.

Ramirez got help from Dan Kolb who was credited with his 2nd save.

the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Los Angeles(NL) won the
hard fought contest in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, J.D. Drew
banged out a single. One out later, Jose Cruz Jr stepped in and he doubled.
Olmedo Saenz then lined a single giving Los Angeles(NL) the win and sending
the home town fans into a frenzy. Los Angeles(NL) managed 11 in their
victory.

Yhency Brazoban(2-1) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Dan

Atlanta went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning when they scored 2
runs on 4 hits. Kyle Davies(1-1) got relief help from Jim Brower who was
excellent in relief and gained credit for his 1st save.

Odalis Perez(2-2) suffered the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 3 walks

It was a real slugfest in Great American Bpk where the Pittsburgh Pirates
finally out-scored the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 13 to 11 in.

Jose Castillo had a good day at the plate. He slapped a one-base hit in the
1st inning, tripled scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning and bombed a
two-run dinger (his 4th of the season) in the 6th inning. Cincinnati was
out-hit by Pittsburgh, 18 hits to 14.

John Grabow(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Mike Gonzalez
gained credit for his 11th save. Ricky Stone(1-1) ended up with the loss in
relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 3 hits and no walks.

The Pittsburgh Pirates nipped the Cincinnati Reds 3 to 2 at Great American Bpk
in a hard fought contest.

Pittsburgh brought 2 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning. The crucial
at-bat was provided by Jose Castillo who quieted the crowd when he blasted a
two-run home run (his 3rd of the season). After the 4th inning, neither team
was able to score.

Paul Maholm(3-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Mike Gonzalez
recorded the save, his 10th. The loss was charged to Ramon Ortiz(2-1). He
gave up 3 runs in 7 innings and saw his ERA jump from 2.19 to 2.56.

The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at 16-15. With the loss
Cincinnati now has a record of 13-5.
