Bot 3rd: Scott Podsednik robbed Mike Sweeney of a Homerun!

In a game for the baseball purist, Brandon McCarthy(3-0) and Runelvys
Hernandez(1-4) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Chicago (AL) Whitesox
finally emerged victorious over Kansas City Royals, 1 to 0.

The winning run, and the only run, was scored by Chicago (AL) in the 2nd
inning. After an out was recorded, Aaron Rowand lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' (his 4th of the season). That early run support was enough for
McCarthy and Chicago (AL). Kansas City threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.

McCarthy was helped out by Cliff Politte who recorded his 1st save. 'I just
wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said McCarthy, 'I got burned on a
couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

Freddy Garcia racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts as the Chicago
(AL) Whitesox outscored the Kansas City Royals 12 to 3.

Garcia(3-4) looked very much in control throughout the day. He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings and surrendered 2
'long-bombs'. Chicago (AL) rapped out 17 hits for the afternoon.

D.J. Carrasco(1-4) absorbed the loss. Garcia was humble when questioned about
his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches this afternoon.
But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That
was an extremely well called game!'

Kirk Saarloos came through with a solid 8 innings as the Oakland A's rallied
impressively to win in dramatic style over Baltimore Orioles, 2 to
1.

Oakland scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 2 runs on
4 hits. Scott Hatteberg led off and started the attack as he hit a single.
Marco Scutaro next to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. B.J. Ryan
then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch. Nick Swisher got his turn
next, but he was a strikeout victim. Mark Ellis came to the plate and
smacked a single knocking in a run. Jason Kendall added to the rally and
lined a one-base hit. Mark Kotsay came next and he laced a base-hit scoring
the final run of the inning. Baltimore was out-hit by Oakland, 11 hits to 4.

Saarloos(2-1) was the winner allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Saarloos got relief
help from Huston Street who gained credit for his 6th save. Ryan(0-1) took
the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 6 hits in 2 innings.

Lee Michaels was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last
at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?
You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what
makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over
'til its over.'

Shea Hillenbrand went deep and had 2 RBI at US Cellular Field as the Toronto
Bluejays staged a comeback win over the Chicago (AL) Whitesox by the count of
8 to 4.

Toronto scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning scoring 5
runners on 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Hillenbrand who
disappointed the partisan crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run (his 4th of the season). Toronto finished with 13 hits while
Chicago (AL) ended up with 5.

The victory went to Justin Speier(1-0) who went 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Neal Cotts(3-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.

After the game, it took a long while before Craig Lombardi emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the Toronto locker room.'

Angeles(AL) Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 6 to 1.

Los Angeles(AL) won the game with a rally in the 8th inning when they tallied
5 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Darin Erstad who
made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he electrified the crowd with a
Grand Slam home run (his 1st of the season). Los Angeles(AL) banged out 9
hits on the afternoon.

Washburn(5-1) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Joel
Pineiro(2-5) was the loser. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an
