Center fielder Curtis Granderson cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Yankee
Stadium as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles by the count

Granderson had a big day at the plate.  He clubbed a two-run home run in the
1st inning and smashed a two-run homer in the 8th inning.  New York (AL)
managed 11 hits in their victory.  
 
The win was credited to Phil Hughes(4-3) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing
no runs. Jake Arrieta(1-2) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 4

Yankee Stadium.
 
New York (AL) scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning with 3 runs.  Derek
Jeter led off and started the rally when he drew a walk.  Nick Swisher
followed next and he drew a walk.  Mark Teixeira then smacked a three-run
homer.  After another out, Robinson Cano struck out, unable to help the
rally.  Rafael Soriano earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 10th save.
 
The victory went to David Robertson(1-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
The loss was charged to Jason Vargas(3-2).  He pitched 7 innings giving up 4
hits and 4 walks.

Justin Verlander shut down the New York (AL) batters on just 3 hits and Austin
Jackson cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Detroit Tigers topped the New
York (AL) Yankees by a score of 7 to 0 at Comerica Park.
 
Verlander(5-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the New York (AL) hitters.
He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings.  Verlander
recorded 12 strikeouts dropping his ERA from 2.83 to 2.47.  Detroit had a
total of 8 hits for the game.  
 
Phil Hughes(3-3) was hit with the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 4 innings of
work.  'Verlander just dominated us' losing pitcher Hughes said.  'Hopefully

In a game for the baseball purist, Jon Lester(3-2) and Henderson Alvarez(3-3)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Boston Redsox finally emerged
victorious over Toronto Bluejays, 2 to 1.
 
Boston brought 1 run across the plate in the 7th inning with the help of 3
hits.  That wound up as the winning run.  Overall Boston out-hit Toronto 10
to 3.  
 
Alfredo Aceves was credited with his 1st save.

Matt Harrison pitched a complete game shutout at Rangers Ballpark as the Texas
Rangers beat the Cleveland Indians by the count of 1 to 0.
 
Harrison(2-4) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He allowed only
5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 6.03 to 4.78.  Texas
managed only 6 hits on the afternoon.  
 
The losing pitcher was Justin Masterson(3-3).  He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 6 hits and no walks.

loss.  Pettitte was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good zip
on my pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.  The fans really
got into the game too - that always helps me.  Now, if I can only do that

the New York (AL) Yankees 6 to 2.
 
Chris Perez(1-0) came on to close the door tight in relief.  He went 3 innings
surrendering no hits and 1 walk lowering his ERA from 3.45 to 2.89.
Cleveland ended up with 8 hits for the game while New York (AL) had 4.
 
Hiroki Kuroda(2-4) was charged with the loss.  With this win, Cleveland has a
division leading 19-9 record.  They have been 6-4 lately.  The loss by New
York (AL) interrupted a nice 8-2 recent run.

Phil Hughes had an impressive outing as the New York (AL) Yankees bested the
Cleveland Indians 6 to 5 at Progressive Field.
 
The game started off with New York (AL) taking the lead in the first scoring a
single run on 2 hits.  Cleveland threatened in the 9th but New York (AL) was
able to put down the rally.  
 
Hughes(3-2) was the winner allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Rafael Soriano earned
the save, his 6th.  Josh Tomlin(0-2) was given the loss.  He gave up 4 runs
in 2 innings of work.
