Jon Rauch stopped Atlanta cold at Turner Field as the Washington Nationals
beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 9 to 7.

Nick Johnson was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors. He belted a three-run homer
(his 1st of the season) in the 3rd inning, lined a one-base hit scoring a run
in the 5th inning and doubled which scored a run in the 7th inning.
Washington had 15 hits for the game and Atlanta had 12.

The winning pitcher was Esteban Loaiza(1-0) who allowed 7 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Loaiza was helped out by Rauch who recorded his 1st save. John
Smoltz(0-1) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 2
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Loaiza, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'
