In a game for the baseball purist, Tim Stauffer(4-1) and Mike Pelfrey(1-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, San Diego Padres finally emerged
victorious over New York (NL) Mets, 3 to 1.

Stauffer had a solid outing for San Diego. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 6
and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA from 3.51 to 3.09. Jeff Fulchino, after
tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 1st save.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Chris Couch said after the game. 'Stauffer did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
