Byrd had a big day with his bat. He rifled a three-run blast in the 4th inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 7th inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 8th inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 9th inning. New York (NL) lit up the scoreboard in the 2nd inning with 4 runs on 5 hits, the 7th inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits and the 8th inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 6 hits. The New York (NL) offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings. Matsuzaka(1-0) went the distance for the shutout. Tyler Thornburg(0-1) was given the loss. He was unable to control the New York (NL) offense and allowed 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. 'He had his 'A' game today,' Craig Lombardi said of Matsuzaka. 'Very impressive performance.'
