At Petco Park, the San Diego fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Jason
Schmidt(3-4) finally bested his San Diego opposite, Brian Lawrence(1-3), by
the score of 3 to 1.

San Francisco scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning. Ray Durham got things going
when he doubled. One out later, Pedro Feliz came up and he hit a deep fly
resulting in a run. Mike Matheny then lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his
2nd of the season). That was all Schmidt needed. San Francisco had only 6
hits for the game.

Schmidt was helped out by Tyler Walker who recorded his 4th save. Lawrence
was charged with the loss. He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just
3 hits and no walks in 5 innings.
