John Smoltz came through with a solid 9 innings and Kelly Johnson jacked one
out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI as the Atlanta Braves defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 9 to 0 at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh was unable to claim the lead after Atlanta went ahead in the top of
the 2nd inning scoring 3 runners on 2 hits. That scoring would be all that
was needed. Atlanta had 17 hits for the afternoon.

Smoltz(4-1) went the distance for the shutout. The losing pitcher was Dave
Williams(4-3). He was unable to control the Atlanta offense and allowed 17
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.
