First baseman Derrek Lee connected with a 'big fly' as the Chicago (NL) Cubs
defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in 11 innings 7 to 6 at Wrigley Field.

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Chicago (NL) came
out the victor in the 11th inning. After two outs Ryan Theriot drew a walk.
Mike Fontenot followed and he slapped a one-base hit. Alfonso Soriano then
ripped a base-knock making Chicago (NL) the victors to the delight of the
home town faithful. Chicago (NL) rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.

Jeff Samardzija(1-1) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Ron Villone(0-3) was given the loss in relief. His ERA increased
from 5.54 to 6.07 as he allowed 1 run in 1/3 of an inning.

'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully
grim,' noted John Thomas. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together
and turn things around!'
