One run was the difference at US Cellular Field as the Chicago (AL) Whitesox
defeated the Oakland A's 7 to 6.

Matt Thornton(1-0) slammed the door shut in an excellent relief performance.
He allowed only 1 hit and no walks in 2 and 2/3 innings and mowed down 4
Oakland batters seeing his ERA drop from 6.75 to 3.38. The Oakland offense
proved no trouble in the 9th.

Santiago Casilla(0-1) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2
hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
