Third baseman Chipper Jones cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and John Smoltz
struck out 10 batters at Turner Field where the Atlanta Braves beat the New
York (NL) Mets by the score of 12 to 7.

Jones was spectacular at the plate. He cleared the fences for a two-run home
run in the 1st inning, lofted a three-run bomb (his 15th of the season) in
the 4th inning and doubled in the 7th inning. The Atlanta offense
man-handled the New York (NL) pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9
innings.

Smoltz(7-1) went 7 innings allowing 7 runs for the win. Kris Benson(2-1) was
the losing pitcher. He served up 4 homeruns in his 3 and 2/3 innings.

Dave Murray was asked about the performance of Smoltz, 'He had his good stuff
out there this afternoon. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts
start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'
