Chris Carpenter(1-0) and Derek Lowe(0-1) treated the St. Louis fans to a fine
pitching duel at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals eventually emerged
as victors over the Atlanta Braves by the score of 2 to 1.

St. Louis set the tone of the game in the first inning plating 2 runs on 2
base hits. Jon Jay got things going when he doubled. After an out was
recorded, Albert Pujols came up and he would ground out. Matt Holliday then
blasted a solo shot. David Freese was next to the plate, but was promptly
struck out. That early scoring was all that Carpenter needed. Atlanta tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Jason Motte preserved the game for Carpenter, recording his his 1st.
