43,697 fans watched an exciting game at Shea Stadium. The New York (NL) Mets
topped the Milwaukee Brewers by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

New York (NL) jumped on top of Milwaukee in the bottom of the 7th inning as
they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Carlos
Beltran who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he stroked a base-hit
scoring two baserunners. Milwaukee made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.

Pedro Feliciano(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Billy Wagner gained credit for his 5th save. Brian
Shouse(0-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 2 innings and surrendered 2
hits and 2 walks.

With this win, New York (NL) has a division leading 13-8 record. They have
been 6-4 lately. Milwaukee has a record of 7-10 after the loss.
