Brett Gardner had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the
Chicago (AL) Whitesox by a score of 6 to 3.

Gardner enjoyed a big day at the plate. He blasted a solo shot in the 3rd
inning, laced a one-base hit in the 5th inning, laced a base-hit in the 7th
inning and tripled plating two runs in the 8th inning. Mariano Rivera, after
tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 4th save.

The win was credited to Phil Hughes(1-0) who went 7 innings allowing 3 runs.
Jake Peavy(0-1) was charged with the loss. By giving up 4 runs in 6 and 2/3
innings his ERA increased from 3.68 to 4.50.
